Financial Secretary's visit to Australia
The Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, visited Melbourne and Sydney, Australia from 1 Sep to 5 Sep to meet with members of the local business, finance, and innovation and technology sectors, as well as visit various enterprises. ...Mr Chan also attended a number of luncheons organised by HKETO in collaboration with local chambers of commerce and groups to explain Hong Kong's latest situation and business advantages.
On 3 Sep, Mr Chan attended the Asia Summit organised by the Australian Financial Review in partnership with the Asia Society Australia in Melbourne, delivered a keynote speech on the future of Hong Kong's economy and joined the subsequent interaction session. Mr Chan introduced in his speech Hong Kong's latest economic situation, business environment and development prospects.
Concluding his visit, Mr Chan said that through exchanges with the commercial and industrial sectors in Australia, this visit has promoted mutual understanding and bilateral co-operation for the future. He hopes that Hong Kong and Australia will deepen co-operation to create more opportunities for the trade, industry, finance, and innovation sectors in both regions.
Seminar "IP: Fuelling Bilateral Trade Between Australia, Hong Kong and Beyond"
HKETO co-hosted a seminar “IP: Fuelling Bilateral Trade Between Australia, Hong Kong and Beyond” with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council and DCC Ventures on 22 August. ...Speaking at the seminar, the Deputy Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Timothy Chau, noted that Hong Kong, with all the advantages under "one country, two systems", has been entrusted by the country to become a regional IP trading centre under the National 14th Five-Year Plan. Mr Chau highlighted that the Government has set aside HK$45 million to help the Hong Kong Productivity Council host a Technology and Innovation Support Centre in Hong Kong, one that will offer patent search and analysis, consultation services regarding IP management and commercialisation. Another exciting initiative includes a "patent box" initiative, reducing the tax on profits derived from qualifying IP from the existing 16.5% to 5%. Mr Chau added that by leveraging Hong Kong’s advanced IP infrastructure, Australian businesses can find new opportunities to protect and commercialise their innovations in a thriving market.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association Annual Gala Dinner 2024 on 15 Aug. ...Addressing the guests, Miss Lim said that the trade relationship between Hong Kong and New Zealand has always been close and strong. Hong Kong is not only a key gateway to Mainland China and the broader Asian market, but also a dynamic economy that thrives on innovation, resilience, and openness. She noted that Hong Kong was New Zealand’s 12th largest export destination in 2023, and the two markets are tightly interwoven across various sectors, from agriculture and food products to financial services and technology. Miss Lim also highlighted the encouraging results of attracting enterprises and talent to Hong Kong.

The Deputy Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Timothy Chau, attended the Business Awards organised by the Western Australia Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 9 Aug. ...Mr Chau shared with the participants the exciting developments in Hong Kong, particularly on attracting enterprises and talent. He highlighted that Invest Hong Kong has already assisted 322 overseas and Mainland companies in the first half of this year to set up or expand businesses in Hong Kong, an increase of 43% compared with the same period last year. The Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises also brought in some 50 strategic enterprises to Hong Kong, covering life and health technology, AI and data science, fintech, and advanced manufacturing and new energy, which will invest more than HK$40 billion in Hong Kong and create over 13 000 jobs. Mr Chau also promoted Hong Kong's status as Asia's Events Capital and encouraged the participants to visit Hong Kong for business or leisure.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Future of Finance in Digital Assets Business Seminar organised by the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association on 25 July. ...Miss Lim said that Hong Kong stands at the forefront of the digital revolution with its dynamic financial ecosystem and robust regulatory framework. She highlighted that the Securities and Futures Commission of Hong Kong has implemented a licensing regime for virtual assets (VA) trading platform since June 2023, enabling investors to conduct trading on licensed trading platforms in compliance with the relevant international standards and in a protected environment. On the market development front, Hong Kong has advanced its securities rules to allow regulated intermediaries to offer trading of eligible VA Futures exchange-traded funds to retail investors in Hong Kong, making it a pioneer in the Asian market.

Miss Lim added that the Government has received over 300 000 applications from different talent schemes in the past year and a half, with 190 000 approved and nearly 130 000 talents have already arrived in Hong Kong. She also promoted Hong Kong's status as Asia's Events Capital, noting that Hong Kong will host over 210 mega events throughout 2024.

She highlighted that Invest Hong Kong has already assisted 322 overseas and Mainland companies to set up or expand their businesses in Hong Kong in the first six months of this year, and over one-third of them are in the I&T, fintech and finance sectors. Miss Lim also introduced the new Mainland Travel Permit for non-Chinese Hong Kong permanent residents to travel to Mainland China and encouraged the participants to explore Hong Kong's vibrant I&T ecosystem.

HKETO presented an award-winning dance performance "Convergence" staged by the Hong Kong Dance Company in Sydney on 12 and 13 July to showcase Hong Kong's unique East-meets-West culture and the city's exceptional talent. ...HKETO hosted a reception on 12 July before the premiere performance to foster cultural exchange between Hong Kong and Australia. The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, said in her welcoming remarks that the Government is dedicated to nurturing the cultural development of Hong Kong, and HKETO attaches great importance to promoting arts and cultural exchanges with the local communities in Australia by actively assisting the touring of arts groups and delegations. Miss Lim also introduced to the guests the newly launched Cultural and Creative Industries Development Agency and various initiatives of the Government to attract talent to Hong Kong.
During their tour in Sydney, the Hong Kong Dance Company also joined with the Academy of Music and Performing Arts to conduct a masterclass and visited the Sydney Dance Company to enhance cultural exchange between the dance communities in the two places.

HKETO supported the 2024 Australia-China Health Summit organised by the Australia China Business Council in Melbourne on 10 July. ...Speaking at a panel session, the Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, said that Hong Kong’s commitment to fostering innovation in health tech is steadfast, with significant investment in research, development, and infrastructure. The Government is rolling out more funding support in life and health technology with HK$10 billion earmarked for such purpose, including HK$6 billion for providing subsidies for local universities to collaborate with overseas and Mainland organisations to set up life and health technology research institutes. She highlighted that since January 2023, Hong Kong's investment promotion agencies have successfully supported the setting-up or expansion of 45 life and health technology companies in Hong Kong from nine jurisdictions. These enterprises will provide more than 3 200 job opportunities in Hong Kong and their total investment approached HK$6.5 billion.

Hong Kong is the international entry point of the GBA with its unique advantages under “one country, two systems”. She added that the GBA is a leader in innovation and technology, offering a wealth of opportunities for young minds to explore. She encouraged the students joining the internship programme to make the most of their first-hand experience in Hong Kong and the GBA, and to embrace the diverse and multicultural environment that Hong Kong is renowned for.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended the “Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA) Development” event organised by the Western Australia Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association on 29 May. ...Miss Lim said that the GBA is a vast consumer market, integrating some 86 million consumers and boasting a GDP worth about US$2 trillion last year, equivalent to the tenth largest economy in the world. Miss Lim stressed that thanks to the “one country, two systems” principle, Hong Kong is the GBA’s international entry point, the ideal base for Western Australia’s companies looking to tap into the region’s vast opportunities, and the best platform to build their Mainland and Asia business. She also introduced the GBA related-initiatives in the Chief Executive’s 2023 Policy Address, noting that foreign staff of Hong Kong-registered companies could make applications in Hong Kong for “northbound” multiple-entry visas to Mainland China for two years or more with priority processing.

HKETO co-hosted a Cocktail Reception with the HKIE in Sydney on 28 May. ... The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, welcomed the HKIE delegation to Australia to further strengthen the close bilateral ties and professional exchanges between Hong Kong and Australia, especially in the field of engineering. Miss Lim said that innovation and technology (I&T) is central to the future of many of Hong Kong’s industries including engineering. The Government is driving various key I&T initiatives, including establishing an AI Supercomputing Centre; setting up the Microelectronics Research and Development Institute; as well as supporting the development of the Hong Kong-Shenzhen I&T Park. Miss Lim also shared with the participants the proactive initiatives of the Government to attract talent to Hong Kong.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Hong Kong Fintech Startup Ecosystem Roundtable co-hosted by Invest Hong Kong and Fintech Australia in Sydney on 21 May. ...Addressing the event, Miss Lim said that Hong Kong proudly hosts around 1 000 fintech companies and start-ups, including virtual banks, virtual insurers and virtual asset trading platforms, representing an increase of 25% as compared to the number last year. Miss Lim noted that the Government will launch the Green and Sustainable Fintech Proof-of-Concept Subsidy Scheme in the first half of this year, which is bound to expand Hong Kong's green fintech ecosystem and will further reinforce its status as an international green finance centre.

Speaking at the Welcome Function on 16 April, the Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, promoted Hong Kong as Asia’s Events Capital, noting that nearly 150 mega events will be held in the city throughout the year, particularly the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races in coming June, Hong Kong Cyclothon, French May 2024 and Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival. Miss Lim also shared the latest sports development in Hong Kong and highlighted the proactive initiatives rolled out by the Government to attract enterprises, investment and talent.
Miss Lim attended the opening ceremony on 17 April and presented the awards to the winning teams of the races named under HKETO. During the 5-day races, 68 clubs with over 2500 athletes from around Australia and New Zealand competed for the Championships across different ages, classes and distances.

A dragon lantern along with eight giant pillar lanterns were displayed to celebrate the Year of the Dragon. Two LED plinths displaying the photos and videos were also set up to showcase Hong Kong’s latest development, unique culture and diversity.
