Hong Kong Film Festival in Australia
HKETO Sydney is delighted to support the Hong Kong Film Festival in Australia, taking place in Sydney and Melbourne from 26 to 29 March. ...
This year’s Festival brings five Hong Kong films to local audiences - “Back to the Past Plus”, “Kung Fu Juniors”, “Pass and Goal”, “Another World” and the restored classic “Chung King Express” – showcasing the depth, creativity and enduring appeal of Hong Kong cinema.
The opening night reception in Sydney on 26 March welcomed over 100 guests from the film, cultural, government, business and media sectors. The atmosphere was electric, with audiences showing tremendous enthusiasm for “Back to the Past Plus” and engaging warmly with the story and talent behind.
Speaking at the event, the HKETO Director Ricky Chong highlighted the Government’s commitment to promoting Hong Kong films on the international stage, enabling global audiences to experience the city’s unique stories, creativity and cultural vibrancy.
The Festival not only celebrates Hong Kong’s rich cinematic legacy, but also serves as a valuable platform to connect filmmakers with Australian audiences and industry partners.



Press Conference of the 2nd Hong Kong Film Festival in Australia
The Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Ricky Chong, attended the press conference for the 2nd Hong Kong Film Festival in Australia on 9 March at Hong Kong House. ...In his remarks, Mr Chong said HKETO is honoured to support the festival in celebrating Hong Kong cinema and the city’s unique role as an East-meets-West hub for artistic and cultural exchange. He noted that Hong Kong films have long resonated with global audiences, from iconic action classics to compelling dramas and bold new works that reflect the creativity and dynamism of the city. Mr Chong also highlighted the HKSAR Government remains firmly committed to promoting the development of arts, culture and creative industries. Over HK$9 billion has been injected into the CreateSmart Initiative and the Film Development Fund to nurture talent and create new opportunities for filmmakers.
Supported by HKETO, the festival will showcase five Hong Kong films in Sydney on 26–28 March and Melbourne on 28–29 March, bringing Hong Kong’s cinematic creativity to Australian audiences and further strengthening collaboration between the film industries of both places.






Reception held in Perth to celebrate the Year of the Horse
HKETO Sydney hosted a reception in Perth on 5 March to celebrate the Year of the Horse, bringing together leaders from government, business, education and the wider community for an evening celebrating the enduring partnership between Hong Kong and Western Australia. ...
In his welcoming remarks, the Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Ricky Chong, highlighted the strong and growing partnership between Hong Kong and Western Australia, and noted Hong Kong’s role as an international financial centre and gateway to opportunities in the Chinese Mainland and the Greater Bay Area. Mr Chong also emphasised the importance of connectivity, noting that twice-daily direct flights between Hong Kong and Perth further strengthen business, tourism and people-to-people tie.
Mr Chong shared recent developments in Hong Kong, including initiatives announced in the 2026–27 Budget to strengthen economic growth, innovation and global engagement. Mr Chong highlighted the "Economic and Trade Express" platform supporting enterprises in expanding internationally. He added that Hong Kong is also strengthening its role as an international education hub under the "Study in Hong Kong" brand, welcoming deeper collaboration with partners in Western Australia.
Among the distinguished guests were the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Perth, Ms Fu Lihua; the Parliamentary Secretary to the Attorney General and Minister for Commerce, Tertiary and International Education, Multicultural Interests, the Hon Dan Caddy MLC, representing the Premier of Western Australia; and Councillor Viktor Ko, representing the Lord Mayor of Perth, alongside Members of the Parliament of Western Australia.












Toolbox Percussion returns to Adelaide Fringe
HKETO Sydney is supporting Toolbox Percussion’s Australian tour from 3 to 15 March, featuring performances and workshops in Adelaide, Brisbane and Melbourne. ...As part of the tour, the ensemble presented four performances of Echoes of Silence – A Contemporary Percussion Odyssey at the Adelaide Fringe from 4 to 7 March, showcasing Hong Kong’s distinctive East-meets-West cultural vibrancy and artistic talent.
Speaking at the preview performance on 4 March, the Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Ricky Chong, welcomed the ensemble from Hong Kong and reaffirmed the city’s commitment to advancing arts, culture and the creative industries as key pillars of international engagement. Established in 2012, Toolbox Percussion is recognised for its bold collaborations and innovative performance formats that reflect Hong Kong’s dynamic cultural spirit.
Mr Chong also highlighted Hong Kong’s role as an East-meets-West centre for international cultural exchange, supporting artists in reaching global audiences. With more Hong Kong artists set to tour Australia in the months ahead, cultural ties between the two places continue to deepen.
Following Adelaide, the ensemble will travel to Brisbane and Melbourne for concerts and collaborative workshops, further strengthening artistic exchange between Hong Kong and Australia.

Addressing the event, Mr Chong highlighted the strong partnership between Hong Kong and South Australia, underpinned by trade, investment and people-to-people ties. He noted that Hong Kong remains an international financial centre and a gateway to Asia, offering South Australian enterprises opportunities to expand into the Chinese Mainland and the wider region. He also thanked the HKABA SA Chapter’s leadership for their continued efforts in strengthening business connections between the two places.
Mr Chong also shared initiatives outlined in Hong Kong’s 2026-27 Budget, including advancing innovation and technology development and promoting green and sustainable finance. He encouraged South Australian businesses to leverage Hong Kong’s platform to explore new opportunities in Asia.



Reception in Adelaide celebrates the Year of the Horse
HKETO Sydney hosted a Chinese New Year reception in Adelaide on 3 March, welcoming over 120 guests from government, business, media and community sectors to celebrate the Year of the Horse. ...
In his welcoming remarks, the Director of HKETO, Ricky Chong, highlighted the strong Hong Kong–Australia partnership and noted Hong Kong remains a key market for South Australia’s premium products. He also welcomed the resumption of direct Hong Kong–Adelaide flights, strengthening business and people-to-people ties.
He introduced Hong Kong’s 2026–27 Budget, which focuses on “Driving High-quality, Inclusive Growth with Innovation and Finance”, and highlighted initiatives supporting innovation and technology, financial development and international business engagement.
Among the distinguished guests were the Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China in Adelaide, Mr Li Dong, and the representative of the Premier of South Australia, Minister for Trade and Investment, Minister for Industry, Innovation and Science, Minister for Local Government and Minister for Veterans Affairs of South Australia, Mr Joe Szakacs.
The reception concluded with a lively Cantonese pop music medley by Hong Kong ensemble Toolbox Percussion, who are also performing at the Adelaide Fringe this week before continuing their cultural exchange programmes in Brisbane and Melbourne.










Sydney Lunar New Year Dragon Boat Festival 2026
HKETO Sydney showcased Hong Kong’s energy and cultural vitality at the Sydney Lunar New Year Dragon Boat Festival at Darling Harbour. ...The exciting two-day event (28 February to 1 March) brought together more than 2,000 paddlers and tens of thousands of spectators, making it the largest dragon boat event of its kind in the southern hemisphere.
HKETO organised a Hong Kong team to compete in the Corporate Category and the Government Industry Challenge on 1 March. Four races were named the “Hong Kong Talent Cup”, “Hong Kong Opportunity Cup”, “Hong Kong Dynamic Cup” and “Hong Kong Connect Cup” to highlight Hong Kong’s vibrancy and opportunities. HKETO Director Ricky Chong presented medals to the winning teams.
HKETO also set up a Hong Kong marquee at the festival to showcase the city’s latest developments, major events and talent-attraction initiatives. Hong Kong-themed banners and souvenirs added to the festive atmosphere, giving visitors a taste of Hong Kong’s dynamic culture and celebratory spirit.
During the festive season, HKETO Sydney also displayed Hong Kong-themed street banners with greetings in major locations across Sydney to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the local community.










Reception in Auckland celebrates the Year of the Horse
HKETO Sydney hosted a Chinese New Year reception in Auckland on 24 February, welcoming 150 guests from government, business and community sectors to celebrate the Year of the Horse. ...
In his welcoming remarks, HKETO Director Ricky Chong highlighted the long-standing and vibrant partnership between Hong Kong and New Zealand, underpinned by shared values of openness, connectivity and free trade.
He noted that New Zealand was the first foreign economy to sign a free trade agreement with Hong Kong, which has continued to create opportunities for businesses on both sides.
Mr Chong also shared encouraging tourism figures, with visitor flows growing strongly in both directions, reflecting deepening people-to-people and business ties.
Among the distinguished guests are the Consul General of the People's Republic of China in Auckland, Mr Chen Shijie; the Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage, Minister of Justice, Minister for Media and Communications and Minister for Treaty of Waitangi Negotiations of New Zealand, the Hon Paul Goldsmith; and the Mayor of Auckland, Mr Wayne Brown.
The celebration concluded with a lucky draw and a vibrant martial arts performance showcasing traditional Chinese culture.

He noted Hong Kong’s continued strengths as an international and business-friendly city, and shared opportunities arising from new developments such as the Northern Metropolis and innovation-led growth.
He also expressed appreciation for HKABA’s role in fostering connections and reaffirmed HKETO’s commitment to supporting businesses in leveraging opportunities between Hong Kong and Australia.

Addressing the reception, the Director of the HKETO Sydney, Mr Ricky Chong, reflected on Melbourne’s vibrant energy as a global events capital, a spirit that resonates strongly with Hong Kong as an international city thriving on connectivity, culture and major events. He noted that the Year of the Horse symbolises energy, renewal and forward momentum, qualities that resonate deeply with Hong Kong’s spirit as a dynamic, resilient and opportunity-driven city. He underscored the long-standing and multifaceted relationship between Hong Kong and Australia, spanning trade, investment, education and people-to-people ties.
Mr Chong also outlined key Hong Kong Government initiatives to strengthen international engagement and future growth. These include the launch of the “Economic and Trade Express” to support enterprises in expanding globally and deepen trade links with partners such as Australia; the development of the Northern Metropolis as a new engine for innovation, technology and advanced industries; and the “Study in Hong Kong” brand, positioning the city as an international post-secondary education hub and destination for global talent.

Mr Chong also shared updates on key Hong Kong initiatives, including the establishment of “Economic and Trade Express” to further strengthen international economic engagement, Northern Metropolis development, and the “Study in Hong Kong” brand.
Looking ahead, Mr Chong said Hong Kong looks forward to deepening its partnership with New South Wales and Australia by expanding collaboration, strengthening economic ties, and fostering even closer connections between the people of both places.
Among the distinguished guests were the Consul General of the People’s Republic of China in Sydney, His Excellency Wang Yu; the Honourable Anoulack Chanthivong, NSW Minister for Better Regulation and Fair Trading, Minister for Industry and Trade, Minister for Innovation, Science and Technology, Minister for Building and Minister for Corrections (representing the Premier of NSW); and Councillor Robert Kok of the City of Sydney (representing the Lord Mayor of Sydney). HKETO Sydney joins UNSW to spotlight Hong Kong’s commercialisation opportunities
The Director of HKETO Sydney, Mr Ricky Chong, attended the Hong Kong Commercialisation Opportunities Workshop jointly hosted by the HKETO and University of New South Wales (UNSW), together with the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC) and InvestHK, on 5 February. ...
The workshop brought together UNSW researchers, startups and innovation stakeholders to explore Hong Kong’s role as a global commercialisation and investment hub, and how universities and spin-outs can leverage Hong Kong as a gateway to international markets.
In his remarks, Mr Chong highlighted Hong Kong’s unique advantages under “One Country, Two Systems”, its world-class research and innovation ecosystem, and its strategic connectivity with the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. He also introduced Hong Kong’s robust support for I&T, talent attraction and startup incubation, which offer significant opportunities for Australian institutions and innovators seeking regional expansion.
The event also featured Ms Bonnie Shek, Director of HKTDC, who highlighted Hong Kong’s unique role as a deal-making platform. Mr Max Lau, Head of Business and Talent Attraction of InvestHK, then shared information on the various incubation programmes and government funding support, followed by real case studies showcasing Hong Kong’s business friendly environment.
The event was concluded by a networking session for the participants to share insights and experience.
