FSDC holds forum to explore career opportunities in Internet finance

The following is issued on behalf of the Financial Services Development Council:

The Financial Services Development Council (FSDC) and the Chinese University of Hong Kong today (October 19) jointly hosted a forum on career opportunities in Internet finance.

Entitled "Development and Career Opportunities in Internet Finance", the forum was the 13th event under the FSDC Practitioner Speakers Series. Today's forum featured the Founder, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Hillhouse Capital Management Group, Mr Zhang Lei, who also serves as a Council Member of the FSDC and a member of the Steering Group on Financial Technologies.

During the forum, Mr Zhang outlined the latest developments and market landscape in the Internet finance sector, including the challenges facing the industry amid intense competition and changes brought about by regulatory requirements, as well as career opportunities ahead. He also noted that the growth of Internet finance has attracted talents from Hong Kong and overseas and created numerous jobs.

Mr Zhang said that Hong Kong is well positioned to step up innovation in the finance sector. He added that traditional banks can reposition themselves to make good use of their professional strength, and the establishment of the Innovation and Technology Bureau is also expected to fuel the development of Internet finance in the city.

In providing tips to the young students, Mr Zhang pointed out the four most important traits in people that he looked for: intellectual curiosity, intellectual independence, intellectual honesty and empathy. The world has already evolved beyond the traditional employment relationship to a partnership model, he said, adding that it's all about bringing out the best of oneself.

The FSDC's Practitioner Speaker Series is a project developed between the FSDC and local universities, with speakers from the financial services industry giving talks to university students about important industry facts and the skill sets required in developing a career in financial services.

About the FSDC

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government established the FSDC in 2013 as a high-level, cross-sectoral advisory body to engage the industry in formulating proposals to promote the further development of Hong Kong's financial services industry and to map out the strategic direction for development.

The FSDC set up five committees, namely the Policy Research Committee, the Mainland Opportunities Committee, the New Business Committee, the Market Development Committee and the Human Capital Committee, as the five streams of its work.
