Hong Kong rose to rank fifth in World Competitiveness Yearbook 2024
In the latest World Competitiveness Yearbook (WCY) 2024 published by the International Institute for Management Development (IMD), Hong Kong’s ranking improved by two places to fifth globally. Among the four competitiveness factors in the WCY 2024, Hong Kong’s rankings in “Business efficiency” and “Infrastructure” rose notably and came within the top 10 globally. The ranking in “Government efficiency” also stayed high among the top three. The ranking in “Economic performance” also saw significant improvement, reflecting the economic recovery in 2023. As regards the sub-factors, Hong Kong topped the rankings in “International trade” and “Business legislation”, and was among the global top five in “Tax policy”, “International investment”, “Basic infrastructure”, “Finance” and “Education”. A Government spokesperson said that the IMD’s WCY 2024 continued to recognise Hong Kong as one of the most competitive economies in the world. With staunch support from the Central Government, the Hong Kong economy has continued to recover after the epidemic. The Government had launched an array of measures to bolster market confidence, organised mega events to bolster tourism and consumption, as well as vigorously attracted enterprises, capital and talent from around the world to come to Hong Kong. Looking forward, Hong Kong will continue to perform its roles and functions as a “super-connector” and a “super value-adder”, and proactively integrate into the overall national development and align with national development strategies.

Chief Executive thanks Mainland and foreign investors for setting up businesses in Hong Kong
The Chief Executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Mr John Lee, welcomed over 400 senior representatives from Mainland and foreign companies at an Invest Hong Kong reception on 20 June, thanking them for their lasting confidence in Hong Kong’s business environment and calling upon them to continue using the city’s global advantages to expand their business worldwide. Speaking at the reception, Mr Lee said that under the “one country, two systems” principle, Hong Kong has the distinctive advantage of enjoying strong support of the country and being closely connected to the world. The city is one of the most liberal and easiest places to do business in the world. Mr Lee said that Hong Kong warmly welcomes enterprises, talent, and investment to seize the unlimited opportunities offered by this vibrant international city.

Announcement of fifth batch of recognised medical qualifications under Medical Registration Ordinance
In accordance with the Medical Registration Ordinance, the Registrar of Medical Practitioners announced on 26 June the fifth batch of 28 medical qualifications recognised by the Special Registration Committee (SRC) which has taken effect on 28 June. Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (4-year and 5-year medical programme) awarded by Monash University; Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (6-year medical programme) awarded by University of New South Wales; and Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (4.5-year and 6-year medical programme) awarded by University of Western Australia are among the newly recognised medical qualifications included in the fifth batch. Together with the first four batches of recognised medical qualifications announced, the SRC has so far recommended a total of 128 medical qualifications for recognition.

Hong Kong’s UGC-funded universities highly rated in QS World University Rankings 2025
University Grants Committee (UGC)-funded universities in Hong Kong have been highly rated in the World University Rankings 2025 published by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), an international higher education organisation. The rankings of six universities have risen, with five of them staying in the world’s top 100. A spokesman for the Education Bureau said on 5 June that the ranking results highlight that Hong Kong’s universities are highly reputable in the global academic community, with excellent performances in terms of quality of teaching and research, and internationalisation. The results add confidence and cohesion to the Government’s commitment to developing Hong Kong into an international education hub and a cradle of future talent. The Government will continue to work closely with the higher education sector in capitalising on Hong Kong’s strengths to attract more talent from all over the world, broaden the international outlook of local students, nurture diversified talent, enhance Hong Kong’s competitiveness, and strengthen Hong Kong’s momentum of development as well as contribute to the nation's development.

Director of HKETO Sydney attended the Invest Hong Kong Melbourne Business Networking Event
The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Invest Hong Kong Melbourne Business Networking Event co-hosted with the Victoria Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association (HKABA) on 12 June. Miss Lim promoted Hong Kong’s important position as an international business and financial hub with its close connectivity to the world and unique advantages under “one country, two systems”. She highlighted the encouraging results on attracting talent and enterprises, with over 290 000 applications from different enhanced talent schemes, 180 000 of them approved and around 120 000 have already arrived in Hong Kong. The Office for Attracting Strategic Enterprises has also brought in some 50 strategic enterprises to Hong Kong, investing more than HK$40 billion in Hong Kong and creating over 13 000 jobs. |

Director of HKETO Sydney virtually attended the Food and Wine Appreciation Dinner organised by the Queensland Chapter of the HKABA
The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended the Food and Wine Appreciation Dinner organised by the Queensland Chapter of the HKABA on 14 June. Miss Lim shared with the participants the vibrancy of the wine trading industry in Hong Kong, highlighting that Australia has grown to become the second largest origin of wine imports for Hong Kong, taking up 19% of import share in 2023, registering an 18% year-on-year growth. Miss Lim also promoted Hong Kong’s mega event economy, noting that over 210 mega events will be hosted in the city throughout the year, including the Hong Kong Wine and Dine Festival to be held in late October. She encouraged all participants to visit Hong Kong to experience its amazing vibe and explore the immense opportunities it offers.

“Convergence” dance performance by the Hong Kong Dance Company (Sydney)
Presented by HKETO, the Hong Kong Dance Company (HKDC) will stage three award-winning performances “Convergence” on 12 to 13 July at Everest Theatre of the Seymour Centre in Sydney. The bold new programme marries a unique dialogue between tranquillity and exuberance, stillness and motion, and follows a collaboration between two Eastern traditions since 2018. The International Arts Carnival (Hong Kong and Online)

Hong Kong Book Fair (Hong Kong)
The Hong Kong Book Fair will be held from 17 to 23 July. The Fair has become an annual major event in Hong Kong with the number of visitors reaching new high every year.
