HKSAR Government welcomes introduction of block trading under mutual access programme
The China Securities Regulatory Commission and the Securities and Futures Commission issued a joint announcement on 11 August on the consensus to introduce block trading (manual trades) under the mutual market access programme. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) Government welcomed the decision. The Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr John Lee, said that in accordance with the National 14th Five-Year Plan, the HKSAR Government has strived to deepen and widen the mutual access between the Mainland and Hong Kong financial markets. The measure announced by the regulators of the two places signifies another breakthrough of Stock Connect, enriching the existing trading channels and enhancing trading efficiency. The measure will further facilitate the mutual access and concerted development of the two capital markets, strengthening Hong Kong’s position and function as an international financial centre and global offshore Renminbi business hub.

Aviation Day 2023
The Aviation Day 2023, co-hosted by Hong Kong International Airport and the International Air Transport Association, was successfully held on 2 and 3 August where industry leaders shared their insights on post-COVID aviation development in cargo, technology, security, with a special focus on the market potential and business opportunities in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). Speaking at the event, the Financial Secretary, Mr Paul Chan, said that the future is bright for Hong Kong as an aviation hub, and this is manifested not just in the sunny economic outlook of the GBA, but also a flurry of the city’s far-sighted infrastructural developments, including the Three-Runway System, the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge, high speed rail and road network connecting to east of the Pearl River Delta, and the upcoming Airport City.

Chief Executive welcomes promulgation of “Development Plan for Shenzhen Park of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone”
The Chief Executive of the HKSAR, Mr John Lee, welcomed the Central Government’s promulgation of the “Development Plan for Shenzhen Park of Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone” (Development Plan for Shenzhen Park) on 29 August. He indicated that the HKSAR would continue to actively collaborate with Shenzhen to take forward the development of the Hetao Shenzhen-Hong Kong Science and Technology Innovation Co-operation Zone, leveraging the comparative advantages of the two places. The Development Plan for Shenzhen Park comprises a total of 30 measures, covering such areas as the development positioning, objectives, overall layout and infrastructure layout of the Shenzhen Park, as well as the collaboration with Hong Kong to promote international innovation and technology (I&T) development.

Secretary for Environment and Ecology attends APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting
The Secretary for Environment and Ecology, Mr Tse Chin-wan, attended the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Ministerial Meeting, under the theme of “Creating a Resilient and Sustainable Future for All”, in Seattle, the United States on 15 August. Speaking at the opening plenary, Mr Tse shared with other energy ministers the HKSAR Government’s strong commitment to combat climate change through four major decarbonisation strategies promulgated in the Hong Kong’s Climate Action Plan 2050. A new Office of Climate Change and Carbon Neutrality has been set up to formulate strategies, policies and action plans for tackling climate change and achieving carbon neutrality with a view to strengthening the co-ordination and promotion of deep decarbonisation. When attending the discussion session entitled Power Sector Decarbonization on the same day, Mr Tse shared with APEC member economies the strategies and work of the HKSAR Government on decarbonising the power sector.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended the “Networking & Panel discussion on Innovation & Technology” organised by the South Australia Chapter of the Hong Kong Australia Business Association (HKABA) on 23 August. Miss Lim said that the 14th Five-Year Plan has indicated clear backing of Hong Kong to develop into an international innovation and technology (I&T) centre. She added that Hong Kong will put its prime focus on further enhancing the I&T ecosystem and promoting industry development, in particular those with strategic importance such as life and health technology, artificial intelligence and data science, advanced manufacturing and new energy technology. |

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Annual Gala Dinner organised by the Hong Kong New Zealand Business Association on 18 August. Addressing over 150 guests, Miss Lim said that there are strong economic and trade ties as well as people-to-people links between Hong Kong and New Zealand, highlighting the areas of mutual interests such as fintech, green and sustainability, and arts and culture that the two places can explore in joint hands. She stressed that Hong Kong remains the only place in the world where China and global advantages converge and the 14th Five-Year Plan has given Hong Kong distinct development directions into eight centres, in areas including finance, trading, shipping and aviation, and I&T. Miss Lim also shared with the participants the proactive initiatives of the Government to attract top talents and enterprises and encouraged them to visit Hong Kong.

The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, attended the Hong Kong Forum Information Sharing Event organised by the National Chapter of the HKABA on 10 August. Miss Lim highlighted that the Hong Kong Forum is the annual flagship event of the Federation of Hong Kong Business Associations worldwide and a celebration for everyone who looks to Hong Kong as the ideal business destination. She said that Hong Kong is the best gateway to the GBA and Mainland market, and is supported under the National 14th Five-Year Plan to develop into eight international or regional centres covering finance, trading, shipping and aviation, and I&T. The Director of HKETO Sydney, Miss Trista Lim, virtually attended the “Hong Kong: Developments in Green Finance and Sustainability” Networking Event organised by the Western Australia Chapter of the HKABA on 10 August. Miss Lim highlighted that Hong Kong is uniquely positioned to play a leading role in green finance. The total green and sustainable debt issued in Hong Kong increased by more than 40% from 2021 to over A$120 billion in 2022, among which the volume of green and sustainable bonds arranged in Hong Kong accounted for one-third of the Asian market. Miss Lim said that Hong Kong will continue to promote the green transformation of the economy along five directions, namely, building a green technology ecosystem, facilitating green finance application and innovation, promoting green certification and alignment with international standards, training for talent, and enhancing exchanges and co-operation with the GBA and international markets. |
